Ayurveda means Science of Life (Ayur – Knowledge, Science; Veda – Life, Longevity) and is one of the oldest medical sciences in the world. As one of the oldest forms of medical sciences and great source of knowledge, Ayurveda is a great complement to modern medicine of today. Ayurveda is a holistic approach to health, bringing together body, mind and spirit. Sri Lanka’s herbs and plants in combination with Ayurveda therapies are used to heal and revitalize, and treat a range of bodily disorders.
Ayurveda today is used for treating diseases or to maintain health and fitness. Your general wellbeing and lifestyle is thought to be closely connected within Ayurveda science and disease are linked to an imbalance of food, stress and toxins, which is something we all encounter in today’s society.
Ayurveda is based on the constitution of the individual to find the best treatment. We are all consisting of a specific combination of the five elements air, fire, water, earth and ether within Ayurveda. These elements compose the three doshas; Vatha (air and ether), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth), which is our individual pattern of energy. Hence diseases are a result of imbalance in the doshas. The intention of Ayurveda treatments is thus to balance the doshas to treat any disease. Herbal remedies, nutritious foods, thermo-therapy and massages are common therapies to help the healing. The aims of Ayurveda is to treat diseases and strengthen your immune system to prevent future bodily disorders.
