On your Holiday Tour in Sri Lanka you have the chance to meet with the beautiful Sea Turtles. On your diving or snorkeling tour you can swim side-by-side with wild sea turtles and you can learn more about them at the Protection Center. However, the Sea Turtles in Sri Lanka are endangered and some species are almost extinct today. Therefore, to support the protection programme for Sea Turtles in Sri Lanka, Eden Lanka Holiday Tours offer all guests to visit the Sea Turtles Protection Center during your Holiday Tour (and keep reading for a special offer!).
In Sri Lanka you can find 5 different Sea Turtles; Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle and Leatherback Turtle. The Leatherback Turtle is the most rare and endangered sea turtle in Sri Lanka. They can become up to 3m and weight up to 750 kg. Impressive! Green Turtles are the most common Turtle in Sri Lanka today.
Risk Factors for Sea Turtle in Sri Lanka
Adult Sea Turtles have very few natural predators. However, younger turtles and hatchlings are more vulnerable and risk being attacked by mammals, birds and fish. The most dangerous threat to sea turtles are nevertheless humans. Turtle eggs and Carapace are very valuable on the black market. The Hawksbill Turtle is almost extinct today because of its very beautiful shell. Green Turtle meat is also used in Turtle Soup, which causes many killings of nesting Green Turtles. Fishing boats and nets are also posing great danger to Sea Turtles.
