Explore the Cultural Heritage of Sri Lanka - Traditional Handicraft - Visit the greenery of Peradeniya Botanical Gardens
Kandy is the southern tip of the Cultural Triangle in Sri Lanka. The city became the last capital of the kingdom in the 16th century, and it was one of the last bastions of Sinhalese independence before the British entered.
Kandy is associated with the history of the spread of Buddhism. It remains a sacred Buddhist site that many believers, as well as tourists, visit.
The Temple of the Tooth Relic is beautifully situated along Kandy Lake and the remains of the Royal Palace. The Temple of Tooth is beautifully decorated with different materials, decorative paintings and sculpted decor. Enshrined in the Temple is the relic of the tooth of Buddha.
The Esala Perahera in Kandy is the greatest religious festival in Sri Lanka. Thousands of pilgrimages as well as tourists come every year in July/August to celebrate and watch the grand pageants and ceremonies. You can also visit Kandy during the Esala Perahera to watch this grand happening. An advice is to book tickets and hotels beforehand to make sure there is availability, as a lot of people come to visit Kandy every year for this happening.
The heritage of Kandy are cultural traditions seen in large parts of Sri Lanka, within architecture, sculpture, painting, dance and music. In Kandy you have the opportunity to see traditional Sri Lankan handicraft making and buy souvenirs such as silk products, gems, batik, carvings and other traditional Sri Lankan handicraft. Skilled handicraftsmen will show you how they create these stunning products.
Only a few kilometres outside Kandy, in Peradeniya, you can also find the famous Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Today everyone is allowed to visit the park, but once only royalties were allowed inside the botanical gardens. Take your chance for a relaxing walk and enjoy all the colourful flowers and greenery.
