Capital in the Heart of Ceylon
King Kassapa I built the capital on the slopes and top of a 180m high granite peak in the 5th century AD. The mouth of a gigantic Lion built by bricks and plaster gives access to this grand palace, followed by a number of galleries and staircases.
Admirers started to visit this abandoned city already in the 6th century AD. Poems inscribed in the rock by some admirers are some of the oldest known texts in Sinhalese language. This abandoned city has had an influence on both literature and thought through the history of Ceylon.
King Kassapa I became King after planning and executing the assassination of his father and dispossession of his brother. The fear of his brother coming back made him build his fortified kingdom on top of the seemingly impregnable granite peak. During the 11 years as a capital, the Lion Rock was a residence of exceptional splendour, which you can still visit today. After the defeat of Kassapa I, the peak was returned to Buddhist Monks.
Sigiriya Lion Rock Today
On the summit of Sigiriya Lion Rock you can visit the ruins of the fortified palace, its cisterns and many sculptures. From the top you will also have a stunning view of the surrounding Jungle and palace complex. The 'Lower City’ you can find at the foot of the Rock, surrounded by a massive wall. You can see terraced gardens with symmetric pools, canals and fountains in the pleasure gardens. After 1,500 years the fountains still spurt water. On your way up to the top you can also see rock paintings of 21 female figures, the Sigiriya Frescoes, which brought universal acclaim to the site due to its beauty.
In Asia, Sigiriya Lion Rock, is the best preserved city of the first millennium. Showcasing complex urban planning, engineering and irrigation skills. It is known as one of the oldest tourist attractions in the world, which is an indication of its grandeur.
